极乐寺建于1893年，寺庙依山而建，占地12公顷。
极乐寺的建设由当时任椰脚街广福宫的主持妙莲法师所启发。妙莲法师原本来自福建涌泉寺，他曾于1885年到槟城州筹募基金修建福州龟山法堂。2年后，出任椰脚街广福宫的住持。槟城极乐寺最先建立的是大士殿，5年后相继增建天王殿、大雄殿、藏经阁、东西客堂及放生池等.

极乐寺的亮点应该算是那建在顶部的巨大观音铜像了，不久前加盖了个八角宝塔保护，远处看起来就更雄伟了。观音像可以坐缆车上去参观，双程是6马币，也可以走路上去，但很远。如果是春节期间去的话，建议在傍晚太阳下山前先上去，这样的话可以看到白天的景色，太阳下山后观音像会开灯，可以看夜景，两者的差别很大。
